At Higgscroft Gundogs we always try and offer a precise program tailored to you and
your dog. I offer mostly group work as this is the most beneficial for your dog.
As a general rule your dog will mostly work within a group of dogs, either on a normal
picking up day or at a trial, a un-
My one to one programs are tailored to your needs as well as the dogs. It is normally the handler who doesn’t understand the problem, not the dog! But both need to work in partnership for a harmonious working life.
Many people always ask at what age their dog should start training, the basic answer is as soon as you get it home!
We are not talking complicated moves such as backs, lefts rights etc. Just small amounts of play for example with a tennis ball in short grass will set the seed for future retrieving.
A young puppy should enjoy your company , so this is a crucial bonding time for you and your new dog.
As your dog quickly grows, so does the amount of training. Whilst all dogs will learn at a different pace, it is important to recognise this and very important not to push your dog too hard too young.
Heel work is something that dogs will learn very quickly if the owner is shown the correct methods, if not, a longer right arm will develop quickly with a full grown dog!
After two years of intensive training, your new dog is ready to start some light duty's.
Many people will push their dogs too fast in the first shooting season, this can cause problems very quickly, dogs running in on game, general disobedience and the like.
Dont run before you can walk!
If possible your dog should have been accustomed to game within a controlled environment, this can be done using either cold game or natural skin dummies.
I have had numerous students go on to win various awards within the gundog and shooting world.
We hope to offer you the same chance and to meet new and like minded friends. All lessons are based on fun and a varied social level, with many lessons either held at our normal grounds or at one of our lakes where we undertake water work lessons. For more information please contact me.
